Waukesha's founding goes back to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. When President Thomas Jefferson purchased the northern section of present day America he opened up a new frontier for settlement including Waukesha County. Morris Cutler is credited with being the first land owning citizen of Waukesha when he staked a land plot in 1834. Settlement became to pour into the era and the land was soon known as Prairieville. Once Wisconsin was named its own territory in 1836 settlement skyrocketed and the County of Waukesha was born. Waukesha means "By the Little Fox" a reference to the quaint Fox River that has played a prevalent part in the cities history. Since these early days Waukesha has grown into a prosperous American city, supporters by a wide commercial and business platform along with friendly community members.
