Wisconsin has always had a need for speed
Automotive racing has been a popular past time since' well, ever since the automobile was invented! Following the Second World War, the Sports Car Club of America decided to pull to together an organize a number or official races and raceways. The first road race hosted by the Sports Car Club of America took place in 1950 at Elkhart Lake. A number of county roads were shut down in Elkhart in order to accommodate the racers. These types of "back-road battles" continued for two years in Elkhart, until an unforeseen tragedy occurred in 1952. During a race in Watkins Glen, a twelve-year-old boy was killed as he was crossing the street. All public roadway races were immediately banned due to safety issues.
The first official home of racing
The tragedy at Watkins Glen proved to be a major blow for the racing community, but it did not permanently stop road racing. In 1955, Cliff Tufte started what is now known as Road America, created the nation's first private racing course. The transition from street racing to private racing had occurred, and all in the sleepy town of Elkhart, Wisconsin.
