Wisconsin Travel and Old World Wisconsin
Old World Wisconsin will take you on a Wisconsin travel adventure back to the pioneer days; back to a very different culture from America today. Yet, they had similar goals to people today: they believed in the American Dream and moved here to capture that dream, just as many people still do today. A day in the life...
Every day, Old World Wisconsin takes visitors back in time. Wisconsin travel visitors that will show the spirit of the frontier. Some of the activities you may participate in include a temperance rally in the Village Grove, Town Hall debates in Town Hall, a visit by the local tax assessor, get a show by the blacksmith, cook on a wood stove, and learn how to live without modern conveniences for a few hours.
Visiting history
The regular season for Old World Wisconsin ends at the end of October, but they reopen for special holiday events that you can take place in while you travel through Wisconsin. Some of the events that take place include a sampling of favorite holiday foods by lamplight, a look at how Finnish immigrants celebrated Christmas and a Finnish holiday dinner, or a breakfast with Father Christmas.
The regular season for Old World Wisconsin runs from the beginning of May until the end of October. During this time they run the regular events and go through the daily activities settlers would have done.
Admission is $14 for adults and $8.50 for children. A family with 2 adults and two children can get a pass for $39, with each extra child costing $3 each. All fees include all-day transportation within the site and a digital audiophone for an electronic guided tour.
To get to Old World Wisconsin on your Wisconsin travel adventure, you will probably need a car. It is located 35 miles from Milwaukee, but it is very easy to get to.
A little close to home
If you can't make it to Old World Wisconsin, there is the Wisconsin Historical Museum in Madison that will provide a wonderful history of the area, from its earliest settlers. This museum will give you the unique heritage of the area, as well as touch on other topics in American history, particularly how it affected the locals. There arte artifacts, photographs, dioramas, and audio-visual presentations that will keep you busy all day long.
Old World Wisconsin is a living replica of the life of a settler in the Milwaukee area. Their hopes and dreams for the future are exposed for the people of our time to see, and it serves as a reminder that while we have come a long way, people are essentially the same as they were over a century ago.
