The building that almost never came to be

Wisconsin native Frank Lloyd Wright originally designed the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center back in 1938. Wright's dream was delayed indefinitely though, following the plans rejection by the Madison County Board. Wright continued to see support for his project until his death in 1959. Plans for a Madison convention center lingered for the next three decades, but nothing was able to please the board and their requirements. In 1990, Mayor Paul Soglin resurrected Wright's original proposal in hopes of making the iconic architects dream a reality. The plans won approval in a public referendum and construction began in 1994. Travel Wisconsin tourists first walked through the center's doors in 1997.
