History

In 1941 the Milwaukee County Airport changed their name to General Mitchell International to honor Mitchell, a man dedicated to the future of aviation in Milwaukee. Mitchell vigorously promoted aviation once he was appointed the Director of Military Aeronautics, and was a staunch promoter until his death in February 1936. 1941 also saw the addition of a new terminal to the airport and marked the beginning of a blossoming transportation center. During the 1950's the General Mitchell International Airport began to see an increase in aviation activity that spawned the need for a second, larger terminal. A second two-level building was added in 1955 to help clear up congestion on both the runway and inside the terminal. New taxiways were added, along with 23 new gates just in time for the jet age of the 1960's. When the big Boeing aircrafts arrived in Wisconsin, Milwaukee was ready and waiting! By the late 1970's renovations were executed along with general maintenance to bolster the General Mitchell International Airport. Today General Mitchell is excited to provide 21st century travelers with a friendly smile, and trusted service.

Airport Configuration

The General Mitchell International Airport is separated into three Concourses - C, D, and E. There are also two parking lots, one covered and one open lot, which are made available for Milwaukee airport car rentals. Concourse C consists of gates 6 to 27 and services five major airlines: American Eagle, Frontier, Comair, American West and Delta. Concourse D is located in the center of the terminal and consists of gates 30 to 56 servicing Air Canada, United Express, Midwest Airlines (Midwest Connect), and US Airways (US Airways Express). The final Concourse services Air Tran, Continental, and Northwest through gates 60-69. The terminal area is filled with a variety of amenities, services and shops that are dedicated to making your Wisconsin travel experience as enjoyable as possible. While you waiting for your departure flight, you have the choice of browsing through shops like the Harley-Davidson store, the PGA store and a quaint Used Book Store. There are also a variety of facilities like restaurants, conference rooms and Traveler's Aid present at General Mitchell International.
