A Brief History of Miller Park
In the early 1980's, after thirty years in the County Stadium, Milwaukee petitioned for the construction of a brand new stadium. Lobbying for this new state-of-the-art field continued for some 16 years, as designers and planners pitched multiple ideas to the Milwaukee Stadium Commission. Finally, in 1996 a $90 million bid to build a convertible-roof stadium was accepted by the board, and construction began November 9, 1996. Construction on the stadium remained on schedule throughout the first two years of the project, until the unthinkable occurred on July 14, 1999. At approximately 5PM the gigantic blue crane, (coined "Big Blue" by operators), which was being used to hoist the stadiums massive roofing scaffolding buckled and broke, killing 3 workers and injuring a handful of others. All construction on the stadium ceased as the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued over 20 citations for safety violations. Work would not begin again for another year, canceling the anticipated 2000 season opening day celebrations.
