Wisconsin Travel and Kettle Moraine Forest
Kettle Moraine Forest has two parts - the Northern Unit and the Southern Unit.
Northern Unit
The Northern Unit of Kettle Moraine State Forest is located about 45 minutes from Milwaukee. There are almost 30,000 acres of hills, lakes, forests, and grasslands for Wisconsin travelers to explore. The forest is also known internationally for its glacial features. A good place to start in the Northern Unit is the Henry S. Reuss Ice Age Visitors Center where Wisconsin travelers will find information about naturalist programs, group interpretive programs, and other information for the park. Features of the Northern Unit include auto tours, camp sites, canoes and boating, cross-country skiing in the winter, hunting, fishing, food services, hiking trails, horseback riding, an Ice Age trail, naturalist programs, wildlife viewing, off-road biking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and swimming.
Southern Unit
The Southern Unit is 30 miles long from the village of Dousman to the city of Whitewater. The headquarters for this unit is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59. In the Southern Unit you will find 20,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, and pine wood and hardwood forests. Wisconsin travelers can camp in three family campgrounds, two group camps, or a horse rider's campground. There is also an overnight shelter along the historic Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, snowmobiling, or cross-country skiing on the more than 160 miles of trail provide endless possibilities for Wisconsin travel adventure. There are two beaches where you can swim, picnic, fish, hunt, and tour some of the historic cabins near the lakes.
The McMiller Sports Center is in the Southern Unit. Here Wisconsin travelers will find shooting ranges open to the public all year. There is also Old World Wisconsin, America's largest outdoor museum on rural life.
Pike Lake
Pike Lake is within the Kettle Moraine Forest, offering great camping for Wisconsin travelers. This is a strip of glacial landforms, extending through southeaster Wisconsin to Lake Winnebago. The landscape here is beautiful, with kames, kettles, and eskers. Visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and much more.
There are 32 campsites for Wisconsin travelers. 24 campsites are in the woods, and 8 are in the open. The campground has many facilities to make your stay here more comfortable. The beautiful trails are also an attractive feature for Wisconsin travel. Pike Lake State Park offers nine trails, ranging in difficulty and length. Fishing is another important draw for the park, with an abundance of walleye pike. There are several other types of fish in the lake that anglers can fish from a boat or from the shore.
Kettle Moraine is a huge park in Wisconsin that has a lot to offer its visitors. Depending on what you are looking to do and where you are visiting in Wisconsin, this park is a great escape for travelers to relax on over 50,000 acres.
