TRAVEL GUIDE

Wisconsin Travel and Historic King Drive

King Drive is a neighborhood in Milwaukee that was settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800s. They built homes, churches, and schools in the area. By the early 1900s, the German community began to move to other areas of the city, while new ethnic groups moved to King Drive, building up the neighborhood even more. Come down to Historic King Drive with your Milwaukee car rental.

In recent years the street has grown again. There have been over $51 million invested in the area, with another $110 million planned for 2000-2005. The Harley-Davidson Museum is in the process of being built here as well. It will be an interactive museum about the history, culture, and lifestyle of the company.

Improved Business

Historic King Drive has a Business Improvement District that seeks to improve the economic development and promotion of the street in downtown Milwaukee. On this street you will find major retailers and specialty shops to shop in with your Milwaukee car rental.

American History and Civil Rights

In the area of Historic King Drive you will find America's Black Holocaust Museum, a museum designed to educate the public on issues of race and racism in America. This is the only memorial in the United States to the victims of the Black Holocaust. Exhibits include "A Voyage to Slavery", a reproduction of the cargo hold of ships carrying African's to America. There are also exhibits on the lives and experiences of African Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries, the culture of plantations, the Senate apology for lynching, and the philosophies of African-American judges in Wisconsin. There are also permanent exhibits about the lives of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Dr. James Cameron, the only known survivor of a lynching. Parking is available here for your Milwaukee car rental.
